My Artistic Journey

I have been a  wax artist  for a number of years, specializing in both encaustic ( hot wax ) and cold wax and oil paint. More recently I have been working  in acrylics because it affords me the possibility of creating  larger pieces.

ENCAUSTIC PROCESS

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is a form of painting that involves a heated wax medium to which colored pigments have been added. The molten mix is applied to a surface—usually prepared wood,

About Sue Kirchner Artist

I was born in New Canaan, Connecticut, and have lived in Cleveland Heights for over fifty years. My art reflects a deep connection to nature, music, and place. Early experiences by the ocean and summers on Cape Cod shaped my sensitivity to landscape, which remains central to my work.  Music has always been a significant influence, inspiring my distinctive abstract style that is marked by intuitive improvisation and layered processes.
I studied art and education at Emmanuel College in Boston and began my career teaching art in Long Island and Milwaukee before settling in Cleveland Heights. While raising three children, I stayed actively involved in local art education and later returned full-time to my studio practice with renewed focus and dedication.

My paintings emerge from spontaneous gestures and an ongoing dialogue between memory, emotion, and natural elements like water and sky. Listening to opera  often accompanies my creative process, reflecting my belief in the inseparability of sound and feeling in art. I constantly experiment with materials and techniques to create dynamic compositions meant to resonate emotionally with viewers.

Throughout my career, I have been honored to receive: 1) the Ohio Buckeye Gold Medal Award in 1991, 2) an Ohio Arts Council Fellowship in 1993, and 3) multiple juried awards across Ohio and Florida. My work has been exhibited nationally and featured in prominent galleries in Cleveland most recently Stillpoint Gallery. In 2024 I participated in the "Prismatic" exhibition at Heights Arts.
